About The Big Green project

Our goals

The project’s focus areas:

  • Internal, sector-specific: Enabling sustainable social change within the cultural and creative sector, answering the question: How can the cultural sector become sustainable, how can it adapt to climate change?
  • External, social: Encouraging broad social transformation beyond the cultural sector, answering the question: How can the cultural sector contribute to social change for a more sustainable Europe?

The objectives of the project, the first two of which are more related to the internal, sector-specific focus area (I), while the last one is related to the external, social focus area (II).

  1. Developing knowledge and skills related to sustainability in the cultural and creative sectors, capacity building for the coordinated functioning of the cultural sector. Creating the knowledge, policy framework and capacity necessary for the sector to operate in line with the European Green Deal, so that the sector can respond to the circumstances brought about by environmental change in terms of both adaptation and mitigation.
  2. Bringing initiatives under one umbrella and creating a network to coordinate efforts, enable greater synergies, and increase the level of cooperation: Bringing together initiatives that are mostly national in scope and creating an arts network that can facilitate the sharing of best practices and leverage the positive impact of cross-border cooperation.
  3. Harnessing the power of the cultural and creative sectors to create positive narratives, raise awareness, and promote social change: Developing new methodologies for interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly between environmental and behavioral researchers and the cultural sector, activists, educators, and natural heritage experts, and working with them to use the tools of art to promote social change and adaptation.

Project design:

Each year, we select an overarching theme that defines the vision and mission of each strategic pillar for that year. All work packages and project activities are built around the annual theme. These are interconnected and build on each other, progressing year by year toward the common goal to be achieved at the end of the project.
