We invite you to apply for support for the creation of new artworks as part of the project “The Weight of Air”.

In the project “The Weight of Air,” five artists or artist collectives from various European Union countries—Latvia, Portugal, Poland, Italy, and the Netherlands—are invited to create artworks related to the theme of “Air” within each artist’s local context. The five resulting artworks will be unique yet interconnected. The “The Weight of Air” project is open to any artistic discipline.

During the project, which runs from October 2023 to July 2024, artists are invited to create new works using environmentally friendly methods. The creative process will take place individually; however, online and in-person meetings are also planned during the project for all participating artists and organizers representing the five countries. In the initial phase of the project, all artists will define the unifying theme of the project to ensure the connection between all five artworks. For this reason, participation in the project’s in-person meeting in Hungary (retreat) from October 2 to 6, 2023, is mandatory.

Air is so ubiquitous that it is taken for granted. It is ephemeral; it seems to belong to no one, and yet it falls under our collective responsibility. It is very difficult to raise questions about its safety, quality, accessibility, pollution, and impact. For this reason, LJTI is seeking an artist or collective to take on the challenge of creating a work that reflects the most pressing local-scale issues related to the theme of air.

The selected artist or artist collective will receive compensation for the creation of the artwork, and production costs will be covered (the specific amount will be determined after the artists have been selected). The creation of the artwork is part of the Creative Europe project “The Big Green.”
